Public meeting on Aurora College report to be held in Yellowknife

The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Caroline Cochrane, will hold a public meeting on the recently released Aurora College Foundational Review Report in Yellowknife tomorrow evening.

This meeting is “a chance for residents to learn about the Review Report, ask questions and provide their responses and concerns to the Minister,” a press release from the GNWT states.

An overarching recommendation of the report was that Aurora College transforms into a Northern Canada Polytechnic University (NCPU) over the next six to eight years.

It was also recommended that the main campus of NPCU be located in Yellowknife, a move that was criticized by Fort Smith Town Councillor Kevin Smith in a Facebook post.

Minister Cochrane held a public meeting about the report in the town of Fort Smith over two weeks ago.

A week later, the town created a special committee that will coordinate a response to the report and “work to ensure that Fort Smith continues to be the headquarters of post-secondary education in the NWT”, the town announced in a press release on Monday.

Another part of the newly formed committee’s role will be “correcting some of the mistaken and misleading findings of the Aurora College Foundational Review, including the post-secondary student experience in Fort Smith” the press release states.

The City of Yellowknife, however, has endorsed the recommendations in the report and is undertaking a feasibility study to determine the economic benefits of establishing a post-secondary institution in Yellowknife and establishing an Advisory Committee to contribute to the process.

The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at the Explorer Hotel, Katimavik Room B.
