The recently founded performance company Parkas & Pasties will be holding a fundraiser on the Canada Day weekend to help local LGBTQ+ production Queerlesque build a new venue.
On June 29th, Game Show Cabaret will combine a game show and a burlesque show for some general debauchery. Audience members will have opportunities to compete and win at a variety of entertaining games, with prizes donated by local companies. There will also be a hands-free donut eating race, a teamwork-driven dirty ring toss, and a high energy lip sync competition. Between games, the audience can enjoy acts by current and past Queerlesque performance artists Uhura Tease, Lady Accalia, and Devine Bellefleur.
Parkas & Pasties’ artistic director and founder Ruby Slickeur says she was inspired to hold a fundraiser for Queerlesque’s 2018 show after hearing about their incredible goal for this year. In their first year as an independent production, Queerlesque decided to create their dream venue.
“Creating a theatre space from scratch is no easy feat,” says Slickeur.
“From finding a rental space and buying equipment, all the way to the initial production costs, this will be an expensive project. I’m so in awe of Queerlesque for putting this much work into creating a space that meets their values – specifically having a space that is accessible to anyone who may want to attend the show, no matter what their physical ability,” Slickeur says.
Aside from the games and performances, the audience can bid on art from Yellowknife visual artists Maddy Tetrault and Peter Kelly, as well as a very special prop from Queerlesque 2017.
Game Show Cabaret will be taking place at the Top Knight on Friday, July 29th.
Doors open at 8pm, show begins at 9pm. Tickets are on a sliding scale of $15-$30, and are available at the door or at gameshowcabaret.bpt.me.
