The Department of Education has awarded 10 northerners with scholarships valued at $5,000 to support their studies in early childhood development.
Education Minister Jackson Lafferty says the Right from the Start Early Childhood Development Scholarship was developed to increase the number of qualified early childhood development professionals in the NWT.
“High quality early childhood programs require knowledgeable and professional early childhood educators,” said Lafferty in a press release issued Monday. “Well-trained practitioners have a direct and lifelong impact on the lives of the children with whom they work.
“Supporting those seeking an education in the field is one way our government can invest in Northerners to meet our goal of healthy, educated people.”
Of the recipients, six are from the Yellowknife area and one is from Hay River.
The Department says the scholarships will be available on an annual basis for the first 10 eligible applicants and that it is already accepting applications for the 2015-2016 school year.
