City endorses Aurora College Review recommendations

The City of Yellowknife announced today that it endorses the recommendations in the Aurora College Foundational Review Report.

The report, which was released in May,  recommended the transformation of the college into a Northern Canada Polytechnic University (NCPU) over the next six to eight years.

“While supporting the concept of the Northern Canada Polytechnic University, the recommendation to expand the legislative framework to allow for other post-secondary institutions in the NWT is welcomed,” a press release from the city states.

The report also recommended that the main campus of NPCU be located in Yellowknife. Currently, Aurora College is headquartered in Fort Smith.

“Establishing a university for the NWT, headquartered in Yellowknife with centres of excellence in Fort Smith and Inuvik, is an incredibly empowering possibility,” said Mayor Mark Heyck.

“This is an opportunity to grow our academic capacity, attract students from across the country, and develop a skilled workforce that can take full advantage of the diverse opportunities in the North.”

The City of Yellowknife is undertaking a Feasibility Study to determine the economic benefits of establishing a post-secondary institution in Yellowknife and establishing an Advisory Committee to contribute to the process.
