Territorial track and field championships held in Hay River

The 2018 NWT Track and Field Championships were hosted in Hay River this week.

The events started on Wednesday and wrap up today at Diamond Jenness Secondary School track.

“The field is full, the sun is out and the kids are having fun,” said Tim Borchuk, one of the co-organizers of the meet and a vice principal at Diamond Jenness.

Borchuk joked that he hopes they’ve been training all year for the meet.

“You don’t have to train to run, kids love to run,” said Borchuk.

“You know, you point them in the right direction and they run. So that’s the beautiful thing about, when we have our younger kids out there, they just want to run. And for our older athletes, most of them are participating in sports all year, so they don’t generally start training for track until after soccer’s done,” Borchuk said.

Borchuk said his role at the meet has been troubleshooting and fixing problems, but the volunteers take care of almost everything else.

“We are on cruise mode today, the track is all set up, all the volunteers are in place,” said Borchuk.

“It’s so great because for the length of time that we’ve been doing this track meet, we’ve had people coming back and they own their pits, and they own their areas and they look after them and they run them.”

“This event is a town of Hay River event. The town takes it on as far as volunteering and the local businesses support us and you know, it’s part of Hay River. It’s part of what we do and it’s great,” said Borchuk.

The results for all track and field events can now be viewed online.
