YK1 educator to be inducted into NWT Education Hall of Fame today

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1)’s  French Programs Supervisor Jean-Marie Mariez will be inducted into the NWT Education Hall of Fame today.

The Department of Education, Culture and Employment created the hall of fame in 2010 to recognize people who play a role in educating children in the NWT.

“Mr. Mariez has been instrumental in promoting second language education for children in Yellowknife for over 15 years,” a press release from YK1 states.

Mariez and six other educators from across the NWT will be inducted into the hall of fame in a ceremony at the legislature today.

Testing confirms a Yellowknife school has elevated copper in water and lead

Testing shows that another school in the city of Yellowknife has elevated levels of lead and testing also confirmed elevated levels of copper present in water from some of its drinking taps. Highway 1 is closed to drivers as of Wednesday morning and the Edzo-Rae Ice Road will see a planned seasonal closure this afternoon. The planned closure was announced earlier this week and is part of seasonal changes that will also see the Dettah Ice Road close later this month.
