A case of invasive strep infection took the life of a person in Yellowknife last week. NWT Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernathy has confirmed the death from Group A Streptococcal disease, adding there is a “relatively large number” of individuals in the community needing follow up.
That’s being done by the Yellowknife Public Health Unit and the Office of the Chief Public Health Officer. According to a notice from Abernathy shared by Yellowknife MLA Julie Green, they are doing contact tracing and offering preventative treatment to anyone who may have been exposed.

Abernathy adds that “Yellowknife residents are not otherwise at unusual risk.” How many people were exposed and where has not been released.
