Premier Bob McLeod is in Ottawa to lead a national roundtable on missing and murdered indigenous women.

Friday’s roundtable includes the families of missing and murdered women and girls, the Assembly of First Nations, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples and all levels of government.

“We’re looking to establish a national dialogue involving federal, provincial, territorial and Aboriginal governments to deal with this violence and to end this violence,” McLeod told Moose FM.

“We’re hoping to reach agreement on what areas to focus on and that everyone will agree it should be on prevention, community safety, policing and justice.”

Last October, McLeod announced that the roundtable would be held in Yellowknife before Ottawa was decided on.

He insisted he was not disappointed with the change of venue.

“It’s just important that we have the dialogue. We had some logistical issues in bringing it to Yellowknife.

“We would’ve had to limit the participation to 120 people so we all agreed to have it in Ottawa so that more people could participate. We’re expecting about 200 people.”

McLeod is hopeful that another roundtable will be held next year.
