YK artists hope to create a home for the arts

Working to reshape a historical landmark.

The Yellowknife Artists Cooperative are working to restore the Heritage Hudson Bay Building in Old Town, Yellowknife.

Right now, the building stands empty; waiting. Soon, the building could be home to a Learning Centre for the Arts. YAC President, Matthew Grogono, says that’s exactly what the City of Yellowknife needs.

The city needs such a creative hub. Artists and arts organisations have told us that they need space for offices, studios, performance spaces, but most importantly, a place to gather and cross-pollinate their ideas and artistic visions.

The group is conducting a survey to figure out if the Centre is a good fit for the warehouse. Grogono says filling out the survey is the voice of the people the YAC wants to hear.

We have a few key questions that will help us make [the] decision. So, we are sending out questionnaires to artists and arts organisations, asking them what kind of art space they need and how much they would be willing to pay to be part of such a Creative Hub.

You can find the survey on the YAC’s Facebook page.
