Basic chemotherapy treatment returns to Stanton next week

Some chemotherapy services will be returning to Stanton Territorial Hospital next week.

Chief Executive Officer of the Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority Sue Cullen made the announcement today.

The returning services are part of the first phase of bringing chemotherapy treatment back to Yellowknife. The phase will involve some patients receiving basic treatment.

Chemotherapy services have been suspended since December after Cancer Control Alberta reviewed the services delivered at Stanton. The review showed a number of areas that required improvement. It was decided that suspension of chemotherapy services was the best option for patient care and service improvements to be made.

Cullen said the decision to suspend services was not ideal, but benefitted future treatment with improvements on the way.

Suspending chemotherapy services at Stanton was not a decision we took lightly, but it was necessary to give space and time to ensure we could make program improvements. Our staff has worked very hard to make the changes required and we are confident that we can provide high-quality care to NWT residents undergoing chemotherapy treatment.
