GNWT helps foster parents with increased rates

The Government of the Northwest Territories is increasing the rates for foster parents.

Effective April 1st, foster parents will receive more money to help better support the children they are looking after.

This is the first rate increase for foster parents since 2007. Since then, the cost of living and cost of supporting children has gradually risen.

Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy said in a statement this increase should help foster parents in taking care of the children they take in.

“Foster parents and adoptive parents provide a safe, stable, loving environment to some of the most vulnerable children in the NWT. The increase in rates will help foster families better support the children they care for.”

The GNWT says this increase should help make the compensation for foster parents equal that of those around Canada.
