Rifle found in Fort Smith snowbank

Fort Smith RCMP have found a firearm.

The gun, a Remington 700, was found in a snowbank between the Fort Smith Recreation Centre and Paul William Kaeser High School. It was determined to be inoperable and therefore posed no risk to the community.

Police say the gun is not related to any of the activities at the Arctic Winter Games. They added that the rifle is believed to be related to a report from last week of a theft of a firearm in Fort Smith.

Media Relations for the Northwest Territories RCMP Marie York-Condon says the seizure is very fortunate given the added population with the AWG.

With the increased population in the community for the Arctic Winter Games, we are thankful the firearm was located by a security patrol and immediately reported to the police.

The investigation into the firearm continues.

Anyone with further information about this incident is asked to contact Fort Smith RCMP at 867-872-1111 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, nwtnutips.com, (click on “submit a web tip”) or text: nwtnutips to 274637.
