Feds tackle ‘Phantom Vehicles’, could help keep NWT roads safe

The Federal Government is looking to crackdown on ‘Phantom Vehicles’.

Phantom Vehicles are vehicles that are on during low-light situations, but for whatever reason, they don’t have their headlights or taillights on.

Transport Canada has passed new manufacturing standards that ensure vehicles will be equipped with automatic headlight sensors that will turn on in low-light situations.

The standards will also include daytime running lights and tail lights that come on when the vehicle instrument panel is illuminated and the vehicle is in operation; as well as having a driver’s instrument panel that stays dark so the driver knows to turn on all the lights.

The move is an important one for northern areas like the Northwest Territories as residents live through dark winters.

The NWT RCMP were reached for comment on the subject but have not responded.
