Town of Hay River workers will remain on strike after the union rejected the town’s latest pay offer.
Mayor Andrew Cassidy said the town’s increased offer had been dismissed out of hand by union negotiators.
“Today, the town met with union bargaining members with an increased offer of 1.25% for each year of the agreement,” said Cassidy in a statement.
That represents a small departure from the town’s initial offer of a 1% year-on-year increase.
“In an effort to end the strike quickly, a timeline was put on the offer,” the statement continued.
“The union bargaining team quickly rejected our offer without bringing it to their membership for a vote. Our original offer of a 1% wage increase for each year remains open for acceptance.
“Unfortunately, the strike will continue.”
Thirty town workers walked out on February 9, saying the proposed pay increase was out of keeping with the cost of living in Hay River.
