GNWT introduces new Disability Framework

The Government of the Northwest Territories has released it’s Disability Strategic Framework.

The framework is a ten year plan that looks to deal with the issues that disabled people in the North face.

They’ve outlined a focus on an aging population, the severity of disability in the North, and an increase in more complex disabilities such as Autism and FASD.

Minister Responsible for Persons with Disabilities, Glen Abernethy, says the Framework is designed to give everyone an opportunity to live their best life.

The NWT Strategic Framework is based on the fundamental belief that every person with a disability has the right to full citizenship and opportunities. It outlines our vision, values, principles and goals and sets direction for our future actions.

Right now there are over 3000 people living with disability in the northwest territories.

It’s expected that the number, and the severity, will increase in the next 15 years.
