Hay River strike: Talks will resume on Wednesday

Talks between the Town of Hay River and striking workers will resume on Wednesday.

In a statement, the union says both parties have accepted an invite from a mediation officer to return to negotiations.

Thirty town workers have been on strike since Monday, February 9.

“Last night, councillors discussed their strategy – as they have been doing every Monday – and we have agreed we want to get back to the bargaining table, hear what they have to say and see where we can go with some negotiations,” said the mayor of Hay River, Andrew Cassidy.

“We’re hopeful that if the workers do accept, we can get things back up and running in very short order – a matter of days, hopefully. But we don’t know how the negotiations are going to go,” Cassidy told Moose FM.

“I’m happy that we’re hopefully coming up with a solution that will get the staff back to work.”

Jack Bourassa, from the Public Service Alliance of Canada, said: “Our members have stood together in solidarity, day and night, and their perseverance has finally paid off.”

Cassidy would not reveal how the town’s position has changed in order for negotiations to resume.

The town triggered the strike by insisting its offer of a 1% year-on-year pay increase was final.
