What has been affectionately nicknamed as the “big commercial ice road” (by the Moose office) will be opening up tomorrow.
The Tibbitt to Contwoyto Ice Road is viewed as arguably the world’s longest heavy haul ice road.
Ron Near, Director of Winter Road Operations, was in studio this morning.
He says that he thinks it’s going to be a good year for the ice road.
“It’s going to be a busy season this year; in fact, it’s going to be our second busiest season in the history of the winter road.”
Near would add that the opening will bring a lot more traffic to the city.
“We’re going to have 9800 northbound loads this year, so roads around town and along the Ingraham Trail are going to be a lot busier with the commercial trucks rolling through. Be cautious and aware that there’s going to be a lot more traffic around town – BIG traffic.“
