Fort Liard woman tackles stray dog issue

Is there such a thing as too many dogs?

The community of Fort Liard is facing that very issue.

The small hamlet has seen a major jump in feral and stray dogs. Resident Laura Diamond-C has been catching the dogs using snares and traps.

A wide range of the dogs have been females, some with litters.

Since October of 2016, Diamond-C has delivered a total of 130 dogs to the NWT-SPCA in Yellowknife. She says the entire process can be physically and financially draining.

“I have a pen where I can crate them to help keep the dogs safe. Right now though, I’m running out of crates – everybody is running out of crates. We’re just trying to get them to Yellowknife so that they can be safe, but one puppy can cost you up to $100. I’m hoping for some help.”

Diamond-C has started a GoFundMe page to help finance the entire process. As of writing this, the page has hit $690.

She says the goal is to raise enough for her own SPCA-style pen to help keep the dogs safe.
