Stanton CEO confident cancer patients receive best care

Yellowknife, NWT – The Chief Executive Officer of Stanton Territorial Hospital says she’s confident cancer patients at the facility are receiving the best possible care.

Brenda FitzGerald was responding after concerns were expressed that the hospital currently has no oncology nurse navigator.

That person helps steer cancer patients through the treatment process.

The person who normally does the job is off on extended leave.

FitzGerald says other health care professionals at Stanton are picking up the slack.

“We’re confident that the physicians, nurses and nurse practitioners are resources and individuals that work with those diagnosed with cancer to really assist them in their cancer journey.”

We asked FitzGerald when a decision might be made on getting a full-time oncology nurse navigator.

“Managers and the directors responsible for the program assess the needs and ask if the needs are being met by other members of the healthcare team. There is a point at which we’ll look at where we are with respect to the position and the need to fill the position on a temporary basis. That is something that is under discussion at the moment.”

FitzGerald says she personally monitors the program to make sure cancer patients are getting all the help they need at Stanton.
