Inuvik French immersion teacher receives Experience Canada Hsitory Award

An Inuvik teacher has been honoured by the Governor General for being innovative in her role.

Denise Lipscombe was presented the Experiences Canada History Award by Julie Payette in Rideau Hall yesterday.

Lipscombe said the people of the north should appreciate the uniqueness of the area, focusing on culture more than anything.

It is important that the youth of the North have an opportunity to show off their region and way of life to develop a new appreciation for their hometown and its cultures,” said Lipscombe. “We tend to idealize what it’s like to live in a city and forget to appreciate all the advantages and opportunities northern communities have to offer.

President and CEO of Experiences Canada, Deborah Morrison adds, “there is no better way to foster a greater understanding of the diversity of cultures and communities across Canada than by providing an opportunity for young Canadians to experience it first-hand.”

The Governor General’s History Awards were established in 1996 to recognize excellence in teaching Canadian history.
