City releases statement over emails

The City of Yellowknife has released a statement regarding what has been labelled as a ‘hack’.

In the statement, the City says they were made aware that staff emails from 2014 were in the hands of a member of the public.

The statement says that the emails did not come from a hack nor a leak.

The protection of information, systems, people and facilities is of critical importance and we work to constantly update and refine our practices,” reads the statement. “We take theft of internal information very seriously and are currently exploring legal options to address these incidents.

The City stresses that transparency is pivotal.

All City of Yellowknife Council meetings are held in public, with a very short and defined list of items that can be discussed in private.

The statement ends by saying the City will continue to provide “the best programs, services and infrastructure possible in order to make our community an attractive place to live, work and visit.

The City says they are exploring legal options.
