The Northwest Territories Mining Heritage Society will now be known as the Yellowknife Historical Society.
The re-branded Society will now shift to becoming more of a museum.
Walt Humphries, President of the Society, says the history of Yellowknife plays a part in the name change.
“The history of Yellowknife and the mines are completely intertwined and since there is no Yellowknife Historical Society or community-driven museum we have also taken on that role as well and want our new name to better reflect this as we move forward with our museum.”
The original Society was formed in 1999 after the shutdown of the Giant Mine.
The main focus has been preserving mining equipment and memorabilia.
A new campaign will be launched in the near future.
