NWT making a shift to agriculture

Can the North become completely self-sustaining?

That is the question the Government of the Northwest Territories is asking after this past weekend.

The Northwest Territories hosted their first Agriculture Conference in Hay River this past weekend.

Topics included panel discussions on raising chickens and beekeeping, northern agriculture research, and greenhouse management.

A few months ago, Moose FM spoke with Jackie Milne, President of Northern Farming Institute.

She talked about the potential of farming in the North.

We are very fortunate that we even have as much wild harvest available to us that we do. In North America, and here are some statistics, we only have less than 2% of the population in food production. That is a vulnerability. Still, that’s only 4, 500 people… That’s not a lot, we can [farm in the North]”
