Several liquor seizures in the NWT

Tampered with beer bottles and liquor seized by Deline RCMP.

It was a busy week for the RCMP in the North District of the Northwest Territories.

Liquor seizures in Fort McPherson, Deline and Norman Wells were all part of an ongoing enforcement of liquor-restriction related laws. Police conducted traffic stops and investigations, resulting in the seizure of alcohol and two firearms.

On the evening of September 30th, roughly 20 cars were pulled over. Liquor and the two aforementioned firearms were seized. Charges were laid for open liquor, but no charges were laid for the weapons.

On the morning of October 2nd, Deline RCMP checked luggage at the airport. They found a person with 12 beer bottles in their luggage. After further investigation, the bottles were found to have been tampered. The beer was replaced with a liquor believed to be vodka. The alcohol was seized with no charges laid.

Also in Deline, a check stop found a person in a vehicle to be in possession of 31 – 375 ml bottles of liquor, which was over limit.

Alcohol seized by Norman Wells RCMP.

A total of 43 – 375 mls and 1 – 750 ml bottles of liquor were seized in Deline last week. No charges have been laid at this time.

On the evening of October 3rd, Norman Wells RCMP investigated the suspected transport of illegal alcohol near the boat dock.

Officers found and seized:

  • 103 – 375 ml of liquor
  • 109 cans of beer/liquor
  • 7 – 1.14 ltr of liquor

No charges have been laid.

Media Relations for the Northwest Territories RCMP, Marie York-Condon, mentioned the importance of protecting Northern communities that impose liquor restrictions.

Every seizure of illegal alcohol is a reduction of potential harm by the transport and sale of illegal alcohol in our communities.
