Conservative leader looks to build relationship with Indigenous communities

The leader of the Conservative party of Canada is looking to build a relationship with Indigenous communities.

Andrew Scheer made his first official visit to the Northwest Territories this weekend. The federal leader criticised the Trudeau government for taking an ‘Ottawa knows best’ approach to the North.

“The missing and murdered Indigenous women’s inquiry is one that I think everyone is concerned about where it’s at and the problems it’s faced,” says Andrew Scheer. “A Lot of people have invested a lot of time and money and shared their stories and it’s emotional for alot of people. Unfortunately the government hasn’t been able to give it any kind of direction. The answer is not just more money has to come from Ottawa, it’s got to be ‘okay what can we do to attract investment to make sure communities can be partners in development’. I truly believe it’s possible.”

Scheer spoke with Moose during his first visit to Yellowknife on Sunday. He says the most common issue brought up by the public was frustration with the new Federal carbon tax being introduced.
