YK1 classes starting after Labour day

The doors are open for all Yellowknife Education District Schools.

Registration for classes has begun for École Sir John Franklin High School and the Akaitcho Trades and Technical Centre, École William McDonald Middle School, Mildred Hall, N.J. Macpherson, Range Lake North, Kaw Tay Whee School, and K’àlemì Dene School.

Superintendent of Education Metro Huculak says there are at least seven Junior Kindergarten classes for the 2017-2018 school year. Those classes offer both half day and full day options.

The addition of Junior Kindergarten will see YK1 implementing Indigenous education into the program. Bringing in elders and learning the land are part of the curriculum.

“We’re trying to get them outside of the classroom as much as possible”, says Scott Willoughby, the Indigenous Education Coordinator for YK1. “The last thing we would try to do is remove Indigenous education, especially from Junior Kindergarten because that is where it’s most important.”

The first day of classes for all YK1 schools is Tuesday, September 5th.
