Fentanyl crisis in Northern Alberta threatens NWT

Two northern Alberta communities with road access to Hay River and Yellowknife are facing a fentanyl crisis.

Alberta Health released new numbers that show Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray have the highest rates of fentanyl overdose deaths per 100,000 people within the first six months of 2017.

NWT Chief Public Health officer Doctor Andre Corriveau says the Health Department is keeping communication open with RCMP.

“If they’re working on an undercover operation, they wouldn’t share that information with us,” says Doctor Corriveau. “If there is a bust and they find new drugs, they have their own labs, so they might realize that there’s new synthetic opioids coming in and they would let us know so we can better prepare our front line providers at the community level.”

Corriveau and the rest of the Opioid Task Force Group will meet on September 14th.
