GNWT did not ‘inherit’ NTCL debt, only core assets

NTCL backtaxes are in the hands of Hay River.

The department of insfrastructure says the 1.3 million dollars of debt is not leftover from the GNWT’s purchase of the shipyard.

According to a statement provided via email, The GNWT did not inherit NTCL’s employees, the purchase the outstanding accounts, or the pension and tax debt.

The GNWT says their immediate focus is on transporting petroleum products and dry goods on Great Slave Lake, the Mackenzie River and the Beaufort coast.

The town of Hay river has not responded to requests for comment.
