Hay River Police bust illegal drug network

A grand slam drug bust!

9 people are facing drug trafficking charges and another two for possession related to an illegal drug network.

Operation Grand Slam involves Hay River and High Level residents.

Morphine, GHB, Codeine, cash and a butterfly knife were also seized.

RCMP say a warrant for arrest will be sought for one individual.

Two of the accused remain in custody, while two others were released on the Promise to Appear in court.

The following people have been charged:

Matthew Poitras (Age 35) Hay River – 2 Counts Trafficking Cocaine, 1 Count Fail to comply Probation

Starr Martel (F) (Age 24) Hay River – 1 Count Trafficking Cocaine, 1 Count Possession Marijuana

Clayton Waniandy (Age 30) High Level – 3 Counts Trafficking Cocaine

Cory Beaulieu (age 20) – Hay River 1 Count Possession of cocaine for purpose of Trafficking, 1 Count Possession of GHB for Purpose of Trafficking, 1 Count Possession of Codeine for the Purpose of Trafficking, 1 Count Possession of Marijuana, 1 Count Proceeds of Crime, 1 Count Possession of a Prohibited Weapon

Isaiah Durham (age 19) High Level – 2 Counts Trafficking Cocaine, 1 Count Possession of Proceeds of Crime

Luke Dagneault (age 20) Hay River – 2 Counts Trafficking Cocaine

Fred Lafferty (age 42) Hay River – 2 Counts Trafficking Cocaine, 1 Count possession of cocaine for purpose of trafficking, 1 Count Proceeds of Crime

Lyndon Antoine (age 25) Hay River – 2 Counts Trafficking Cocaine

Bradley McAruthur (age 37) – 1 Count Trafficking Cocaine

Minister urges feds to provide long-term funding for Inuit Child First program

The government of Canada has announced a plan to extend funding for the Inuit Child First Initiative. In response, Education Minister Caitlin Cleveland said that it is a positive sign. The minister added that it remains unclear whether the guidelines for Inuit Child First or Jordan’s Principle have changed in a way that allows children and families to better access services in the N.W.T.

AVENS awards honour “650 years of collective service” for care workers

AVENS announced that they are holding a ceremony in honour of long-term staff at the facility, which first opened its doors over 40 years ago in the city of Yellowknife. The “Going the Extra Mile for Seniors” Awards ceremony will celebrate “650 years of collective service.”In an announcement today, Colleen Wellborn, Chair of the AVENS Board of Directors said the event highlights dedicated staff, whose contributions are “vital” to the older adult community.
