Car hits 11-year-old at downtown Yellowknife crosswalk

An 11-year-old is recovering after being struck by a vehicle at a downtown Yellowknife crosswalk.

The driver attempted to stop but slid into the Franklin Avenue and Forrest Drive intersection in icy conditions on Thursday evening.

The child was taken to Stanton Territorial Hospital with injuries that RCMP say are not life-threatening.

The driver, who stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, has not yet been charged by police – though an investigation into the collision is ongoing.

“There is potential for tickets under the Motor Vehicle Act but nothing at this time,” said RCMP Constable Elenore Sturko.

“Alcohol is not considered a factor.”
