Canada Summer Games: August 9 Recap

It looks like Yellowknife was not the only Canadian city hit with harsh weather.

Whenham and the Rain Delay

The Golfers were delayed by a few hours as a storm blew through Winnipeg. They managed to finish the second round, though. The bulk of the golfers remain at the bottom of the pack, with North American Indigenous Games standout Deanne Whenham keeping pace in 29th out of 31.

Personal Bests

The Northwest Territories Swim Team had a bit of a rough day in the final rounds. After a fantastic run on Tuesday and qualifying for the Men’s 50m Breaststroke Final, Gabriel Leclerc came in 15th with a time of 27.81 in the Men’s 50m Butterfly Final. Leclerc has had a strong tournament though, with his Tuesday performance arguably being the best showing of any NWT athlete at this year’s Summer Games.

According to Team NWT’s Ollie Williams, the NWT swimmers are, “currently operating at a 98% success rate for the week when it comes to setting personal bests in their events. We’re extremely happy with our performances in the pool so far.”

Growth

The NWT Volleyball Teams were both swept yet again, despite consistent improvement being shown. The Men’s Team lost a game to both Ontario and New Brunswick. The Women’s Team lost their only game of the day to Newfoundland.

Preview

The Golfers were up bright and early for the 3rd day of the 4 day tournament. They started at 6:00 am.

Swimming has two sessions. The first session was at 8:30 am, and the other is not until 3:30 pm.

The Men’s Soccer Team has a game today after a day off yesterday. They have back-to-back 4-0 losses so far this tournament. Despite that, they may have pieced together the best performances of any NWT Soccer Team ever at these Summer Games. It’s Rivalry Night, as Team NWT takes on Yukon at 2:30 pm.

The Women’s Volleyball Team takes their turn to have two games today. They’re playing Quebec at 10:00 am, and will have another team announced later for a Placing Round match-up. The Men will face Prince Edward Island in their only game today. It’s a Placing Round match-up, and that will be at 3:00 pm.
