10th Anniversary of Historic Declaration of Indigenous Rights

Today marks 10 years since the creation of the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous peoples.

The Declaration created a framework of minimum standards for the survival, dignity and well-being of Indigenous peoples worldwide.

The NWT became the first Canadian jurisdiction to support the Declaration in 2008.

The federal government became a full supporter of the Declaration in May 2016.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada recommended that all levels of government use the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a framework for reconciliation.

The NWt Human Rights Commission released a statement, calling today a historic milestone that serves as a reminder that much remains to be done to close the gap between the formal recognition of the rights of Indigenous peoples and effective policies to implement those rights.
