Canada Summer Games: Long Weekend (August 4-7) Recap

The athletes had Saturday and Sunday off.

Skylar Horton went into the break having taken a step-up from the qualifying round. Horton went into the finals as the 12th place Long Jump finalist, and managed to finish 11th, with a jump of 5.01m.


Yesterday was a BUSY day for Team NWT. A lot of events kicked off their debut match-ups, with Men and Women’s Volleyball, Men’s Soccer, Mixed Tennis and Swimming all finally participating in the Games.

The Women’s Volleyball Team suffered 2 losses. They lost to Ontario in the 3 straights: 25-3, 25-9, 25-10; and to Alberta in 3 sets, 25-9, 25-9, 25-6. The Men’s Volleyball Team lost to Manitoba in 3 straight sets as well: 25-10, 25-11, 25-4.

The NWT Mixed Tennis Team lost in a quick sweep, 2 sets (0-6, 0-6), to Manitoba.

In Swimming, Team NWT finished near the bottom of the pack of all of their respective heats. Gabriel Leclerc finished relatively the highest, 16th out of 22 athletes, with a personal best time of 9:36.50 in the Male 800m free. Other solo swimmers, Aisling Dunn and Elle Mitchener, also reached personal bests, with Dunn besting her time by an unprecedented 2 minutes.

The main event was the Men’s Soccer Team’s 4-0 loss to Newfoundland.


Golf began at 6am this morning.

There will be more swimming on today, with 2 separate spurts beginning at 8:30 am and 3:30 pm.

The Men’s Volleyball Team has 2 games today, Alberta and Newfoundland. The Women’s Volleyball Team plays New Brunswick.

The Men’s Soccer Team plays New Brunswick as well.
