Changes to VSA for Human Rights

There are a few changes coming to the Northwest Territories regarding Human Rights.

The Government of the Northwest Territories introduced two changes to the Vital Statistics Act (VSA). They’re designed to promote inclusion and respect.

The first change allows Indigenous people to register a single traditional name based on their culture.

The second change is that LGBTQ+ residents will now have the option of an alternate gender marker for those who may not identify as either male or female.

The NWT will be the first jurisdiction in Canada to offer a third gender marker option on birth certificates.
