Arsenic levels decreasing at slow rate

A newly released map shows that arsenic levels around Yellowknife are decreasing at a significantly slow rate.

Chief Public Health officer Doctor Andre Corriveau is providing updates on arsenic levels on a regular basis.

“There’s been some improvements in Kam Lake from older data but it’s still very high,” says Doctor Corriveau. “[There are] some small lakes that were not there before or certain outflows from the Con Mine area. The YK River is fine. It’s the source of drinking water for Yellowknife. It’s tested regularly. It’s never had high levels of arsenic or other contaminants.”

Corriveau says Yellowknife and Cameron River are safe to swim and fish in, however it is recommended not to drink untreated water anywhere.

A detailed map of arsenic levels across the Yellowknife region can be found here.
