Metis Corporation says Dene Nation still owes $90,939 in rent

The Dene Nation still owes over $90,000 in rent, according to the NWT Metis Development Corporation.

Dene Nation Grand Chief Bill Erasmus told the Dene National Assembly last week that the amount of money owed for rent is being blown out of proportion.

“We were not in serious trouble,” said Erasmus. “However, the people we were renting from took us to court and we didn’t pay it because lawyers instructed us not to pay it until there’s completely an understanding. We assure you that we don’t owe all the money that was reported.”

The NWT Metis Corporation says multiple attempts have been made to retrieve the remaining rent money with no success.

Letters of complaint have been sent to Dene Nation funders including the Assembly of First Nations and Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada.
