47th Dene Assembly starts in Hay River

“We’re Dene, and this is our land,” says Dehcho Grand Chief Herb Norwegian. “That’s the bottom line and that’s where we’re coming from. For us to move forward. We’re taking small steps making sure that when we’re moving forward every little increment and every little grain of sand and every little leaf counts while being taken care, making sure that somebody speaks for the animals somebody speaks for the people. It’s this kind of a thing that brings us together. It’s what makes us who we are.”

The 47th Dene National assembly is underway in Hay River.

The three day agenda is already ahead of schedule with Grand Chiefs presenting community reports and financial updates.

“The first day is always reporting,” says Dene National Chief Bill Erasmus. “We update one another from our particular responsibilities. We also deal with our audit and to have our financial books in order. That’s always on the first day.”

The Dene National Assembly is on the K’atl’odeeche First Nation reserve until Thursday, July 20tH.
