Justice Minister defends John Howard Society’s takeover of Men’s Healing Program

The Justice Department is defending their decision to give the New Day Mens Healing program to the John Howard Society.
The Tlicho Friendship Centre says they submitted a proposal to run the New Day Mens Healing program, but the Justice Department says otherwise.
“Initially when it first went out there were no bidders,” says Justice minister Louis Sebert. “That’s when we approached likely candidates and the John Howard Society with 150 years of experience in this area seemed to be an appropriate provider.”
The previous program, which was run by the Tree of Peace, featured 2 counselors that provided one on one and group sessions. Sebert could not confirm if counselors are currently available in the John Howard Society.
“I understand that they’ve been hired,” confirmed Sebert. “So we have confidence that the counselors they have hired will be helpful to the program.”
The John Howard Society and New Day program is located on 48th street and is open Monday to Friday from 1pm to 5pm.
