The Beaufort Delta Detox Centre Society Board of directors met for the first time on Monday.
The goal is to open a detox centre in Inuvik, which would make it the only detox centre in the NWT.
Currently patients suffering from addictions from alcohol, drugs, foreign and illegal substances are sent south for treatment.
The Detox Centre board says the next step is to begin lobbying the GNWT and the Federal Government for necessary funding.
“The board agrees that it will not be easy to obtain and secure funding to establish such a project, but have endeavored to work with diligence towards this goals and objectives,” according to a press release from the Beaufort Delta Detox Centre Society. “In addition, the board will work with the local addictions and wellness departments to ensure that the needs of those that are suffering from addictions will have a place to get out of danger as soon as possible.”
