Yellowknife children win new bikes at Bike Rodeo

The 33rd annual Yellowknife Bike Rodeo is being touted as a huge success.

The event, hosted by by the City of Yellowknife’s Municipal Enforcement Division, helped more than 320 children through obstacles to practice bike safety. Each child earned a chance to win one of several bicycles, donated by multiple sponsors.

The event also had a handful of volunteers. École St. Patrick students helped the officers with the obstacle courses; Denise Drouin assisted children by properly fitting their helmets and provided new helmets to more than 155 children who needed one; and five mechanics from Joint Task Force North Headquarters provided general bike tune-ups.

Yellowknife Mayor, Mark Heyck, was at the event. He felt that the event was clear proof of what good can be done in the community.

“The Bike Rodeo is a terrific example of our Municipal Enforcement Officers working together with community partners to provide bicycle safety training for Yellowknife children and overall increasing safety awareness.”

The MED will take a few weeks to follow-up with all the prize winners and calculate their final budget. Plans for next years Bike Rodeo will begin later this year.
