Taking Home Gold: NWT students finish strong at national competition

The Northwest Territories are home to a National Baking Champion.

Karis Dekwant, an 11th grade student from East Three Secondary School in Inuvik, won the gold medal for baking at the 23rd Annual Canada National Skills Competition in Winnipeg.

Yellowknife had some strong finishes as well, with 6 Sir John Franklin High School students placing in the top 7 of their respective fields.

Carson Asmundson and Benjamin McGregor placed 5th overall in the secondary TV/video production competition.

Niva Stephenson placed 6th overall in the secondary photography competition.

Emily-Ann Andrews, Austin Brown and Max Goering all finished 7th overall in specific graphic design competitions.

The National Competition serves as a vital way for students to develop their skills and network with peers across the country.

There are more than 40 events that each province and territory can participate in. This year saw over 500 competitors come from across the country.

The 24th Annual Canada National Skills Competition will be held in Edmonton next year.
