NWT looking to monitor environment for more understanding

The Northwest Territories will have 13 new environmental monitoring and research projects in the near future.

They’re being awarded through the Northwest Territories Cumulative Impact Program.

The NWT CIMP is designed to provide knowledge to allow for Northerners to create and maintain a better environment.

The projects range from tracking landscape change and cumulative impacts using remote sensing to the use of Traditional Knowledge in order to better understand changes in both boreal and barren-ground caribou habitat.

The announcement for the project was made on June 5th, which happens to be World Environment Day. Environment and Natural Resources Minister Robert C. McLeod made the announcement, and said that the research is going to set up a brighter future.

These monitoring and research projects target key knowledge gaps for caribou, water and fish. This knowledge is essential in ensuring our natural environment remains healthy for current and future generations.

The 13 new projects will be funded during the 2017-2018 fiscal year. They’ll be led by First Nations, Canadian universities and Territorial and federal government departments.

The total funding for the projects is more than $700,000.
