Decision expected this morning in Yellowknife assault case

A verdict is expected this morning in an assault case involving a well-known Yellowknife actor, musician, and houseboat bed and breakfast operator.

Daniel Gillis is facing three counts of assault, one count of sexual assault, and three counts of failing to comply with condition of undertaking or recognizance.

Two assault charges stem from 2014, while the other assault charge and the sexual assault charge are from 2016. The three charges of failing to comply with condition of undertaking or recognizance are from 2016 and 2017.

The complainant, who has asked not to be named, phoned The Moose yesterday to say she felt “doubtful” about the upcoming verdict and “failed by the system”.

Gillis, a familiar figure in Yellowknife’s theatre and music scenes, has denied all charges. He’s also known as the co-owner of the Yellowknife Bay Floating bed and breakfast.

The verdict is scheduled for 9:30 am.
