Dominion Diamond wins environmental excellence award

Dominion Diamond Corporation has been chosen for the Environmental Excellence Award by Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM).

The company was chosen for the award because of its waste management program at the Ekati Diamond Mine, including composting, incineration, landfill, and hazardous waste management.

The award was presented at the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) 2017 Awards Gala.

“Dominion takes our responsibility to the environment seriously, as demonstrated through our waste management program, and we are honoured to be recognized for those efforts,” said Brendan Bell, chief executive officer for Dominion.

“We are particularly proud of our teams that have worked so hard to transform how waste is managed at the site to reduce emissions, improve sustainability, and keep the environment clean and safe.”

Dominion was the first northern mine to compost a significant portion of waste through its industrial composting unit starting in 2015. Approximately half of organic waste generated at the mine is composted.

Last year, the Dominion Diamond and Diavik Diamond Mines were presented with the top Environmental Excellence Award by TSM for their joint Grizzly Bear Monitoring Program.
