Canadian North abandons plans to fly to Clyde River, Nunavut

Less than a year after announcing a flight would be added to Clyde River, Nunavut, Canadian North says they are abandoning plans to launch the new route.

The airline announced late last year that the route to Clyde River would operate three times a week, after its codeshare agreement with First Air ends on May 16.

In a news release on Tuesday, however, the airline said it no longer thinks the route is viable.

“This decision was made in response to unique factors pertaining solely to Clyde River, including an inadequate number of confirmed bookings as well as limited demand for its freight services due to the lack of a contracted retail partner within this community,” read the news release.

The airline says it will contact customers who are booked to fly to or from Clyde River after May 17 and their flight(s) will be confirmed on another air carrier.

Despite canceling the planned route, the company still sees room for expansion.

“Canadian North remains confident that there is ample demand and strong potential to grow its market-share within the other 18 markets in its network, including the four communities where it will resume or significantly expand its operations – Pangnirtung, Qikiqtarjuaq, Pond Inlet and Kugluktuk.”
