7-year-old skater safe thanks to volunteers’ quick action

A 7-year-old is safe and sound after a scare Wednesday night while skating on Back Bay, Great Slave Lake.

At around 8:40 p.m., Yellowknife RCMP received a call that the child had disappeared from their parents’ sight. According to police, volunteers began an immediate search.

Police deployed snowmobiles to the scene, and an Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle (UAV) was sent up to search the area.

Yellowknife Ground Search and Rescue were also activated, but they weren’t needed for long.

At around 9:20 that night, about 40 minutes after the call was made, a volunteer found the child skating some distance away from where their parents last saw them.

According to police, the 7-year-old was reunited with their parents, uninjured, and in good spirits.

“This event reminds us of how quickly situations can change, especially in the warming temperatures by day and challenging conditions of our ice and snow packed lakes,” said police spokesperson Marie York-Condon in an email.

“The RCMP reminds the citizens that with the upcoming spring thaw, there may be changing conditions on our rivers and lakes. The RCMP reminds all citizens to be aware of their surroundings and those of their loved ones and take care when adventuring outdoors.”

Both the child’s parents and RCMP are thanking volunteers for aiding in the search.
