Breast cancer workshops held this week in Yellowknife

Yellowknife, NWT – Artwork and dialogue will be used this week in Yellowknife to help people dealing with breast cancer.

A workshop will be held Wednesday and Thursday at Aurora College’s main campus at Northern United Place.

Workshop coordinator Johanna Tiemessen explains who can attend.

“Women who are undergoing cancer treatment or enduring post-cancer times as well as caregivers who have been taking care of relatives or loved ones with cancer, so that they can use art coupled with guided group discussions with trained facilitators to allow themselves to find a place of healing.”

Tiemessen says getting together with other breast cancer patients to create art is a proven treatment.

“The use of art as a medium, as a therapeutic way to allow healing to progress and to come out is something that’s been documented to help people heal from traumatic experiences.”
