Dettah Ice Road, winter roads to close this weekend

The Dettah Ice Road is closed for the season as of Friday due to flooding at the shore, according to a tweet from the Department of Infrastructure.

The Dettah Ice Road isn’t the only winter road closing this weekend. At 10 a.m. Saturday, both the Nahanni Butte Ice Crossing and Tłı̨chǫ Winter Road System with also close for the season.

This year, the Dettah Ice Road opened on Jan. 6, the latest opening the ice road has seen since 1999.

Last year it opened on Jan. 2 and closed April 18; comparatively, the 15-year average is an opening date of Dec. 21 with a closing date of April 21. Friday’s closing comes two weeks earlier than the average, 11 days earlier than last year.

Testing shows elevated lead in water at more Fort Smith buildings

A number of municipal buildings in Fort Smith show elevated levels of lead in water, according to initial testing results announced on Friday. It is unclear how many buildings are affected but offiicals said more information would be made public in the coming days. “We would like to inform residents that recent water testing at Town facilities has found lead levels that require follow-up and action,” read a message posted by officials on the town’s site.
