Dettah Ice Road, winter roads to close this weekend

The Dettah Ice Road is closed for the season as of Friday due to flooding at the shore, according to a tweet from the Department of Infrastructure.

The Dettah Ice Road isn’t the only winter road closing this weekend. At 10 a.m. Saturday, both the Nahanni Butte Ice Crossing and Tłı̨chǫ Winter Road System with also close for the season.

This year, the Dettah Ice Road opened on Jan. 6, the latest opening the ice road has seen since 1999.

Last year it opened on Jan. 2 and closed April 18; comparatively, the 15-year average is an opening date of Dec. 21 with a closing date of April 21. Friday’s closing comes two weeks earlier than the average, 11 days earlier than last year.

Water testing at another Yellowknife school confirms elevated lead and copper

Testing at another school site in the city of Yellowknife showed elevated levels of lead and copper in water present in some of its drinking taps. Earlier this month, testing showed four other school buildings in Yellowknife and a school in Behchokǫ̀ had elevated levels of both copper and lead in water. Since comprehensive testing of schools across the territory began this fall, 28 school sites out of 34 announced to date have tested positive for elevated levels of lead.

GNWT closes Mackenzie Valley Winter Road for season

GNWT's Infrastructure department says the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road is closed for the winter season. The Wekweètì and Gamètì winter roads remain restricted to night travel only between 10 pm to 10 am. A representative with GNWT’s department of Infrastructure said access to winter roads and sections are limited to timed travel to preserve their longevity at the end of the winter road season.
