Record number of films to debut during 2017 Dead North festival

A record 35 films will premiere during the fifth annual Dead North Film Festival later this month.

The Yellowknife-based festival is open primarily to the circumpolar world and has seen over 50 films submitted since its inception – including 25 last year alone.

Some of those entries have gone on to screen at major festivals around the world, including Fantasia and the Clermont-Ferrand Film Festival.

Dead North challenges filmmakers to make short films (10 minutes or less) in the horror, science fiction or fantasy genre in the dead of winter.

Filmmakers from across the Northwest Territories and Yukon submitted entries for this year’s festival.

“We are thrilled to see Dead North growing each year and can’t wait to showcase the creativity and perseverance of a record number of Northern filmmakers at this year’s festival,” said Dead North co-founder Jay Bulckaert.

To accommodate the record number of entries, this year’s festival will include a Thursday night screening and two Sunday screenings – making the festival four days long.

All 35 films will debut at Yellowknife’s Capitol Theatre between Feb. 23 and Feb. 26.

As has become tradition, Dead North will also feature a number of public workshops teaching everything from special effects to financial advice.

The official program and tickets will be released on Feb. 17. You can watch submissions from previous festivals here.
